First: Don't Force It
The most important thing to know when your garage door won't open is to resist the urge to force it. Whether you're pushing the button repeatedly, yanking on the handle, or trying to manually pry it open — all of these can cause additional damage or injury. The door is telling you something is wrong. Your job is to figure out what.
Step 1: Check the Obvious Stuff First
- Is the opener plugged in? Sounds basic, but circuit breakers trip. Check the outlet and the breaker.
- Are the remote batteries dead? Try the wall button. If the wall button works but the remote doesn't, it's the batteries.
- Is the opener in vacation/lock mode? Many openers have a lock function that disables the remote. Check your wall panel.
- Did someone pull the emergency release cord? The red cord disconnects the door from the opener. If it was pulled, the door won't respond to the opener until you reconnect it.
Step 2: Listen and Look
When you press the button, what happens?
- You hear the opener motor running but the door doesn't move — the trolley is likely disconnected, or the drive gear is stripped. Don't keep running the opener.
- You hear a loud pop or bang and then nothing — a spring almost certainly broke. Stop immediately. Do not attempt manual operation.
- The door moves a few inches then reverses — usually a sensor alignment issue or the travel limits are off. The sensors may be dirty or misaligned.
- Nothing happens at all — power issue or the logic board in the opener has failed.
Step 3: Try the Emergency Release — Carefully
If you need to get your car out and you've confirmed the spring is intact (you can see both ends of the spring on the torsion bar without any gaps), you can try the manual emergency release: pull the red cord straight down, then try to lift the door manually from the inside. If the door feels extremely heavy, stop — the spring may be broken and the door is unsafe to lift manually.
